Key Stage Three

11 – 14 years of age

When they reach Year 7, pupils move to our custom built Secondary site, just a short distance away from Primary. Years 7 to 9 are known as Key Stage Three and here pupils at our british secondary school follow the full range of English National Curriculum subjects, taught by our excellent specialist teachers. Subjects include: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, French, Art & Design, Computing, Music, Drama, Physical Education & Sports, Religion or Citizenship. In addition, Spanish language and humanities (Cultura Española) are taught according to local Spanish requirements (around 20% of curriculum time).

In addition, many Year 7 pupils take the Cambridge English as a Second Language (ESOL) PET examination and Year 9 pupils the First Certificate English (FCE) examination. Moreover the French department prepares pupils for the Alliance Francaise CAF tests, achieving some outstanding results. As pupils at ISM start French in Year 5, a high level can be reached, meaning that our pupils have the possibility of being proficient in three languages, English, Spanish and French.

Pupils at our british secondary school benefit from a range of specialist facilities, including science laboratories, computer suites, art studios and our large sports hall. Sports lessons also regularly take place at nearby pitches and tracks (including for swimming, athletics and team games).

Key Stage Four

14 – 16 years of age

In Key Stage Four, pupils at our british secondary school study a number of compulsory and optional subjects, preparing for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations taken at the end of Year 11. Compulsory IGCSE subjects are: First Language English, English Literature, Mathematics, Co-ordinated Sciences (double award) and Spanish.

Students then select three further subjects from the following choices: French or Geography; History or Computer Science; Economics or Art & Design. ISM also offers pupils the chance to study for IGCSE Drama, and French, as after-school activities. In addition, all pupils at our british secondary school receive lessons of Physical Education and Sports, Sociedad (aspects of Spanish history, geography and culture not covered by the British curriculum), and Religion or Citizenship. Many pupils in Year 11 are prepared for Confirmation each year.

Beyond the Curriculum

Our pastoral care and house system provide opportunities for our pupils to develop abilities and skills beyond those that are purely academic. The annual drama performance, this year Aladdin, the KS3 induction camp and the ski trip are excellent examples of activities outside the classroom which encourage personal development, social skills and promote the sense of family we are so proud of at ISM.
